A Brief History of the A.M.E. Zion Church of Kingston

Celebrating 178 Years of Faith, Service, and Community (1848–2026)

Founded in 1848, the African Methodist Episcopal Zion (A.M.E. Zion) Church of Kingston, located at 26 Franklin Street in Kingston, New York, is one of the Hudson Valley's historic African American religious institutions. For 178 years, the church has served as a spiritual home, a center for community engagement, and a beacon of hope, faith, and social justice.

The church's historic building, rebuilt following a devastating fire in 1926, stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of its congregation. Throughout its history, the church has played an important role in advancing civil rights, promoting education, and addressing the needs of underserved populations.

The church also owns the historic AME Zion Mt. Zion Cemetery in Kingston, which is final resting place to many veterans and their families, including members of the USCT 20th Regiment. Both the church and its cemetery are listed on the National Historic Register (Listing Date: March 3rd, 2021).
